What can we learn from the Lost Boys?

I recently saw a musical performance of the Disney classic Peter Pan. It was good to get reacquainted with the story again. Then, almost by coincidence, I heard a new song called 'Neverland' which is based on the Peter Pan story. Fortunately I saw the musical first as it gave the song more meaning.

What struck me most about the song was the rapper's lyrics. The rapper's name is Abstract and you can check out the full lyrics here. Abstract's words are so profound. Especially these words:

You can stay young forever if you follow your heart
Know a 9-5 tear the soul apart
Keep it safe you can keep your soul in art
We can't live a lie, we would rather die, if I don't live for this I am not alive
I don't deserve the breathe, I don't deserve the steps, don't deserve the criticism or compliments
This is who I am, this is what I do
Outside of never land I don't have a clue
They call us lost but this is the place where I was found

His sentiments are the same for people with too many talents and no clue which way to go, or how to use them in a conventional environment. When the body is present but the soul is vacant it's easy to not be sure we're living the right life. Until we can awaken the soul and find our rightful place where our talents are best used, we'll always feel lost.

In Peter Pan, Wendy's parents took in the Lost Boys. Although we don't all have access to people like that, you can have hope that if you want to be found there's support out there. This could be through a coach, a mentor or a friend.

What's more important to remember though, is that you need to look inside yourself first and be tuned into the interests or work that makes you feel most alive. What's right for you is different to what's right for someone else. So don't compare, it's a waste of your energy.
